Rolex Daytona 116509 – 18K White Gold – Black Racing Dial – Sticker Caseback – Mint Conditions
Like all great modern watches, the Rolex Daytona is rich in history. Unlike most watches, however, its history is linked to one person in particular, Paul Newman. The famous Hollywood actor and driver famously wore a specific variant of the original Daytona series, an exotic dial ref. 6239.
The second Daytona series had the movement supplied by Zenith, furthermore, after the brand was sold to another company, the movement underwent a modification by an engineer named Charles Vermot and became known as the Zenith El Primero.
Although the first series Daytona is considered collectible, note that the impact the second series Daytona had on the collector market was notable. Released in 1988 and produced until 2000, the second series Daytona is what gave us the foundation of the contemporary Daytona aesthetic. With an updated 40mm case, compared to the previous 37mm, the second series Daytona is almost indistinguishable from the modern third series. Powered by perhaps one of the greatest chronograph movements ever, the Rolex cal. 4030 – a highly modified El Primero movement, is made iconic by it.
This rare example of Rolex Daytona reference 116509 has the following characteristics:
