The Rolex Explorer was first introduced in 1953. Initially, it was developed only for professional use as a prototype watch. One of the rarest and oldest examples of the “Explorer” model is the reference 6150 also called “Pre-Explorer” since it did not bear the famous “Explorer” writing on the dial. In 1959 it introduced the reference 1016. Distinctive features of this model include the slim Oyster case and black dial with luminous indices, including Arabic numerals at three, six and nine o'clock.
