Reference 6238 is the bridge between traditional Rolex chronographs and later modern Rolex chronographs. Introduced in the early 1960s, preceding the first Daytona by a few years, it was produced until 1967 when it completely gave way in the catalogue to the various versions of the Daytona: for this very reason the reference is known in the world of collectors with the nickname “Pre-Daytona” to underline its role as predecessor of the famous model. The 6238 is the last chronograph produced by Rolex to have a smooth bezel and a graduated scale printed on the dial, speaking of the clock face, Reference 6238 will also be the last to feature monochromatic dials (Rolex experimented with contrasting counters with this reference, with the very rare “Panda” version).
