The Rolex Explorer was first introduced in 1953. Initially, it was developed for professional use only with the introduction of prototypes tested in the most adverse and critical weather conditions such as the ascent of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. One of the rarest and oldest examples of the “Explorer” model is the reference 6150 also called “Pre-Explorer” since it did not bear the famous “Explorer” writing on the dial.
The Explorer 1016 model was introduced in 1959: originally featuring a glossy black dial, it was the first Explorer to be marked “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” on the dial.
The 1016 remained in production until 1989, making it the longest-running and most continuously produced Rolex model in the history of the crowned Maison.
The present Rolex Explorer reference 1016 has the following characteristics:
Stainless Steel Oyster Case and Bracelet
Black Dial “Matte” MK3
Excellent conditions
