In the late 1960s and early 1970s, man began to explore the depths of the sea like never before. Among the most notable missions were the pioneering ones by the United States Navy, which tested underwater habitats in the heart of the ocean. At the same time, deep-sea divers, such as those from the French company Compagnie Maritime d'Expertise (known as Comex), who were already working with Rolex, began to demand watches with superior water resistance, which were necessary for complex maritime operations, such as the maintenance of underwater drilling rigs located at extraordinary depths.

In this context, Rolex, with the support of these leading organizations in the sector, began to develop watches capable of withstanding deep dives and the extreme conditions of underwater habitats, where a pressurized mixture of helium and oxygen was used for breathing. The name chosen for the new model was “Sea-Dweller”, which in Italian means “Dweller of the sea”, a clear reference to the aquanauts involved in the development of the model, who attempted to “inhabit” the ocean depths. Only after obtaining positive results during the missions with partners, Rolex decided to launch the model on the market.

One of the most collectible versions of the Sea-Dweller 1665 is the “Double Red Sea-Dweller” (DRSD), produced between 1967 and 1977. This version is distinguished by the two lines of red text on the dial, which read “SEA-DWELLER / SUBMARINER 2000”. Later versions, known as the “Great White”, eliminated the red text in favor of an all-white print, also marking the end of the co-branding with the Submariner.
